Recently, I’ve seen some comments from people in the business world claiming that organic traffic is dead and that paying for traffic is the only way to meaningfully grow your business.
I can’t speak for all niches, but I can say this: As someone who spends every day looking at funnels and ads, I know for a fact that organic marketing is so NOT dead for experts, coaches, consultants, and agencies.
You might be wondering why I’m telling you this. After all, I’m a Facebook ads expert. Isn’t it to my advantage to let you believe that your organic marketing efforts are hopeless?
Perhaps . . . But I would be lying to you. And my ultimate goal here is to help you get the most out of your marketing efforts so you can grow your business.
For businesses that are just getting started, organic marketing is what allows you to gain traction and leverage in the online space. Your organic traffic gives you a sturdy foundation to build your business on. Then, as your business grows and paid traffic becomes more integral to your strategy, having a steady flow of organic traffic will help you generate great leads and keep your ROI nice and low.
I’ve seen this play out in many of my clients’ businesses, as well as in my own. Even as a Facebook ads expert, I make about $400k annually on organic marketing alone. It’s not unheard of for me to create a few strategic Facebook Posts and bring in $15k in a week, without spending a dime on marketing. In fact, I didn’t even need to use paid traffic in my own business until I started hitting $40k/month because my organic posts were THAT strategic and engaging.
Recognizing the importance of organic traffic is only the first part of the battle. The next question is inevitably, HOW can you get more organic traffic for your business?
This comes down to creating interesting, value-driven posts that people will WANT to engage with. With that in mind, here are a few pointers to help you uplevel your organic marketing game . . .
If you’re like most online business owners (including me), you probably spend a lot of time on social media. This is a fantastic way to find organic marketing inspiration.
As you scroll through your feed and your groups, pay attention to what catches your eye. Open up the notes app on your phone and start a list of content that inspires you. If you come across a blog, comment or post that makes you feel like you have something to say, jot it down and hold onto that thought for later.
When you’re not on social media, you’re carrying on with the rest of your business and your personal life. If you can train your brain to think from a content generating perspective, you’ll notice that your offline life is FULL of topics that spark your emotions and inspire you to speak up.
When these “aha” moments happen, add them to your list as well. Incorporate enough detail that you’ll be able to remember exactly what happened and respark your emotional reaction, but don’t feel pressured to craft your whole post in real time.
We all have a few minutes here and there that feel like wasted time—waiting in line at the store, watching Netflix, getting put on hold while you try to make an appointment, etc. Take advantage of these moments.
Whenever you find yourself with a few spare minutes, go back to your inspiration list. Think about what angles you’ll approach your posts from. Brainstorm ways to add a little more of your own personality and a lot more value. Add these thoughts to your notes as well.
When you’re finally ready to create your posts, open up your inspiration list and start writing. Try not to overthink this part—your goal here is simply to get people to interact with you. Lead with an attention-grabbing headline, make sure your content provides value to your audience, and end with a question or CTA that makes it simple for someone to respond.
Pro tip: Don’t feel like you have to have a perfectly quiet, inspired, peaceful block of time to create your posts. I often like to write my posts on my phone while my husband drives us around! Use whatever time you have available to you.
Even if your posts are amazing, you probably won’t notice a massive spike in organic traffic overnight. It’s easy to feel like your hard work isn’t paying off, and there will probably be days when you’ll want to throw in the towel . . . But generating high-value organic traffic takes time and effort. The best advice I can give you is, don’t stop.
As you work to provide more engaging content and boost your organic marketing efforts, remember: Your big goal here isn’t necessarily to make more sales right out of the gate.
While we all hope our organic traffic eventually leads to more income, your first order of business should simply be to establish new relationships and build a genuine connection with people who know nothing about you. If you can accomplish that, increased sales will eventually follow.
